I finished reading War and Peace by Leo Tolstoy (translated by Richard Pevear and Larissa Volokhonsky) on February 16th and literally every day since then I have thought about how to write this review. Crime and Punishment, translated by Richard Pevear & Larissa Volokhonsky (Everyman's Library). My edition teeters in at 1273 pages, but some editions go up to 1500 pages. Translated by Richard Pevear & Larissa Volokhonsky (Farrar, Straus and Giroux). For the Williamstown production, director Richard Nelson enlisted the help of celebrated translator team Richard Pevear and Larissa Volokhonsky to create a new English-language version. We're using the Pevear-Volokhonsky translation, but feel free to take up any of the available translations. The War and Peace Reading Support Group begins on Monday, but we will start reading the Tolstoy this weekend. The job of the 1 War and Peace by Leo Tolstoy. We'll see on that day where I stand with my resolution to read Leo Tolstoy's War and Peace in 2010. I will be reading from the Pevear and Volokhonsky translation, but I have also heard great things about the translation by Anthony Briggs. Using several examples from Tolstoy's War and Peace, the author gives the reader a whole new look and appreciation into the world of a translator. Today I spent a good amount of time sitting outside reading the London Review of Books, and there was an excellent review of Pevear and Volokhonsky's translation of War and Peace. The first translation I read YEARS ago was Constance Garnett's from 1901, and it didn't have even a fraction of the life-force of the Pevear/Volokhonsky version. Of course, for Russian lit I go straight for Pevear & Volokhonsky!
